As I've already said, I'm slowly making changes and additions to our kitchen to make it a little more livable...or at least more lovable, as last I checked renters aren't allowed to knock down walls.
Since the kitchen is supposed to be the heart of the house, I think what I do in it should matter just as much as how it looks, and this past Sunday I did something new in my ugly kitchen that I really enjoyed...
I made Marc and I mason jar lunches!
No, not these ones... but I spotted this photo while poking around on Pinterest and immediately thought the idea was right up my alley!
I've made a habit of packing my lunch every single day (to save myself $50+ of unnecessary expense and to make sure I eat decently well-balanced meals), so this seemed like a really cool way to do so that could help me ward off a little lunch-time monotony.
You might say that bringing a home-made meal or leftovers in a jar may not sound all that different from packing your lunch in ziploc containers, but it just is.
Jars are beautiful, they have a nice weight to them, and at the end of the day they just make food look more appetizing. What's not to like?!
For my first go at it on Sunday evening, I threw together what we had on hand:
- quinoa with soya sauce and sauteed onions, diced green/red peppers
- grilled seasoned zucchini
- tomato wedges baked with parmesan and dried basil from our own garden
- hard-boiled eggs sliced and sprinkled with salt, pepper and dill
There you have it! Different, delicious (if I do say so myself) and perfectly filling... not too shabby for my first try, eh?
